Cocos Island—think big
Cocos Island glistens like an emerald in the Eastern Pacific. Its basalt cliffs are surrounded by some of the most spectacular diving on the planet. Here, pristine waters take you back in time to unspoiled oceans; home to large schools of hammerheads.
Welcome to the realm of large pelagic fish where the waters explode with life. The inhabitants include innumerable whitetip reef sharks, dolphins, mantas and marbled rays, giant moray eels, schools of jacks and the occasional whale shark. PADI rates it one of the top ten dive sites in the world.
Designation as a Costa Rican national park ensures access to Cocos and the surrounding waters is strictly limited. The island is uninhabited, apart from park rangers who closely monitor the volume of visitors, ensuring the island remains a pristine oceanic destination.
According to legend, 18th Century pirates buried their treasure here. The real treasure is indisputable: the abundance of marine life you’ll encounter beneath the waves.
Cocos Island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. It’s also been called one of the seven wonders of the natural world—visit and you’ll understand why.
